Goshen Community Schools is proud to present multiple opportunities for student participation in theatre, both on stage and behind the scenes. Goshen Junior High School provides daytime elective classes for 7th and 8th graders: both beginning and advanced theatre curriculum study and performance. Students have multiple opportunities to participate in after-school theatre as well. The junior high performs a junior high version musical each fall and a straight play each February. Beginning Theatre daytime classes offer 7th and 8th grade students the opportunity to study not only acting techniques, but also theatre history, vocabulary, theatre elements, theatre tech, critical viewing, job skills, and more. Beginning students perform twice: Ancient Greek Myths connecting with theatre history and Fairytales with a focus on plot and character development. More details can be found here: GJH Bewginning Theatre Details An Advanced Theatre course is also offered to 8th graders who have completed the beginning course, as well as passed the exams and performance criteria. Advanced students focus on four genres of study: Medieval theatre, Commedia dell’arte, Shakespearean, and modern. Students read multiple scripts, vote on the three performed genres, and study the fourth as a research project in May. Students perform three times publicly, one of which is a change in venue to Goshen Theater in downtown Goshen during February’s First Friday festivities. Each spring, students travel to Goshen Intermediate building to perform a skit introducing 6th graders to the possibility of theatre in junior high. Some years, students have also performed multiple times for senior adults at Greencroft Communities in Goshen and/or the junior high student body. The Goshen High School Music Department has joined together to present an extracurricular musical for more than 45 years, showcasing the talents of students both on and off the stage. Students from across all disciplines are given the opportunity to audition to be on stage, back stage, or in the pit orchestra. Shows typically include 25-50 students on the stage, a crew of between 5-10 technicians, and a pit orchestra of between 15-25 students from band and orchestra. Students audition in the winter and musical rehearsals last just under three months culminating in one or two weekends of performances. Students learn broad aspects of musical productions, from advertising to memorizing lines, from learning choreography to building a set, and from learning the notes and rhythms to how to follow a live stage performer from the pit orchestra. Students annually perform for the GCS fourth grade students to introduce them to theater.
