Message from the Principal

Mr. Joshua Duell

Welcome to Chandler Innovation Academy! I’m honored to serve as the principal of a school where curiosity is encouraged, creativity is celebrated, and learning is deeply personalized for every student.

At Chandler, we believe students thrive when they are actively engaged in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences. Our dedicated team of educators is committed to nurturing a school culture where students are empowered to think critically, solve problems, collaborate with others, and explore their passions. Whether through project-based learning, student voice and choice, or real-world connections, we aim to equip students with the skills and confidence to become lifelong learners and future-ready leaders.

As we continue to grow and evolve, our focus remains on building strong relationships with students, families, and the community. We know that education is most powerful when it’s a true partnership, and I look forward to working together to support each child’s success.

Thank you for being part of our Chandler Innovation Academy family—we’re excited about what we can accomplish together!

Mr. Joshua Duell, Principal

What is Chandler Innovation Academy?

Chandler Innovation Academy (CIA) is home to two specialized programs offered by Goshen Community Schools:

  • Chandler Virtual Academy (CVA): A fully online learning option for students in grades 9–12 who need a flexible, self-paced education. CVA students receive one-on-one support, access to live tutoring, and the ability to participate in GCS extracurriculars. Many students in CVA are pursuing personal goals, managing medical needs, or simply thrive better in a virtual environment.

  • Goshen Alternative Program (GAP): An in-person program designed for students who need a smaller, more supportive environment to succeed. GAP focuses on building strong relationships, restoring confidence, and helping students grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Both programs reflect our commitment to meeting students where they are and helping them move forward—on a path that works for them.

Opportunities

Students benefit from the flexibility of an online learning program and the unique opportunities provided by Goshen Community Schools.

  • Graduates will earn a Goshen High School diploma, that could include 9-12 diploma track for a General, Core 40, or Academic Honors diploma.
  • Students are provided with a specific class time where they can receive one-on-one support as they engage in a high-quality curriculum.
  • Students receive individualized guidance and support from a CVA teacher, principal, and school counselor.
  • Live tutoring support is available from 8:15-11:30 a.m. and 12:00-3:15 p.m. each day that school is in session.
  • Options for Advanced Placement (AP courses) are included in the curriculum.
  • Students may participate in school-sponsored activities, clubs, sports, field trips, and social events, such as school dances.
  • CVA also offers a hybrid option where students may elect to participate as in-person students for 1-2 select courses at Goshen High School and attend other courses virtually at CVA. The list of approved courses is vast, which offers the flexibility needed for many students.

Who CVA is Tailored for

  • Students who are pursuing an activity that has a schedule that schools cannot accommodate
    • Travel Sports
    • Families who are serving in an educational capacity overseas
    • Persons with professional opportunities in music, sports, or other high-level jobs with the expectation of an alternative schedule.
    • Home school students who might need support in higher-level classes.
  • Students whose parents have military assignments and schedules
    • Your family is living locally, but parent(s) travel abroad.
  • Students with medical diagnoses and/or needs
    • Families experiencing a need for either short-term or long-term medical leave.
  • Students who are seeking alternative education options
    • Have withdrawn to a virtual school
    • Live outside of the district and desire a quality Goshen Community Schools education without physically attending classes in a school building
    • Need an alternative to an in-person school setting.
    • Need Credit Recovery or desire an accelerated path to a high school diploma.

Who Gap is Tailored for

Goshen Alternative Program is specifically designed to support students that are not finding success in the traditional classroom environment.  For example:

  • Students who need significant remediation:
    • Student is significantly off track to graduate and needs to earn more credits than possible in a semester at their home high school
  • Students who have health concerns:
    • Student is experiencing a sudden health crisis
    • Student is a parent/expectant parent
    • Student is experiencing chronic health issues
    • Student has medically documented anxiety that is interfering with life
  • Students who have family support concerns:
    • Student is working full-time to support the family
    • Student is supporting their family as a child care provider
    • Student has assumed a caretaker role of a family member

A Day in the Life of a CVA Student

Students attending CVA can expect to experience as much flexibility as they want with specific parameters for teacher assistance and support. There are two specific sessions where students have direct access to their support teacher for three hours:

    • In those three hours, a student will be able to communicate via zoom calls or through the chat feature on our classroom management software.
    • Teachers are available to instruct and explain during these hours.
    • Teachers are available to model specific learning tasks and the thinking and problem-solving.
    • Students can request help from the instructor via email and other means of communication.
    • Students can set-up consultation appointments with the school counselor.
    • Students are free to find their own independent work time to complete coursework and meet the grade expectations.

A Day in the Life of a GAP Student

GAP is a half-day program that meets from 8:15 AM to 11:30 AM or 12:00 PM to 3:15 PM. When students arrive in class, they find two teachers who are trained to support and inspire the students’ journey.  The curriculum is tailored to the needs of the student and is self-paced.  We eliminate many of the stressful points in the traditional school day.  No passing periods and a controlled hallway allow all students to feel safe and calm.  We have incentive plans that help students prioritize their learning journey. As a student in the Goshen Alternative Program, they will feel celebrated and valued as students as they build success in the classroom.
